The Wyck Association
invites you to become
A Friend of Wyck
Greetings to present and future members of the Friends of Wyck. We would like to welcome you as part of the larger Wyck family. Membership includes family descendants, educators, students, architects, horticulturalists, gardeners, historians, tourists, and any others with a special interest in the many aspects of this National Historic Landmark house and garden.
What is Special About Wyck?
The house is almost 300 years old, the oldest in Germantown. It served as a hospital for the wounded of the battle of Germantown in1777. Its unique design emerged from revisions by William Strickland in 1824. Nine generations of the same family lived at Wyck from the late 1600s until 1973. The house went directly from being a private residence to being a house museum--nothing was lost. The furnishings are the same day-to-day furnishings used over several hundred years, including ceramics, toys, utensils, and books.
The grounds include unusually well- preserved outbuildings: smoke, ice, and coach houses. The garden, dating from the 1820s, includes the plantings of old roses whose cuttings recently revived Jefferson’s garden at Monticello.
Members of the Wistar-Haines family were farmers, merchants, and brewers, who made Washington’s beer in the 1790s. They were deeply engaged in the intellectual and practical life of early Philadelphia, especially in business, science, horticulture, education, and social reform. The family maintained Philadelphia Quaker traditions throughout its 300-year history.
Privileges and Pleasures of Membership in the Friends of Wyck
Your membership will connect you with the living history of a prominent but not famous middle-class Philadelphia family. Each visit will give you an enriched view of how one family lived through changing times. Your membership includes admission to the house and gardens, a newsletter for periodic updates on old treasures and new discoveries, discounts on special workshops, lectures on topics such as gardening, textiles, or family life, and invitations to celebrations of the New Year, the roses, and the harvest.
Your support of the Friends of Wyck is a major part of making all this possible. Thank you.
