Utilizing our site's land, history, and collections, we offer reasonably priced public programs and free community fesitvals with an emphasis on urban agriculture, local history, horticulture, and family.
All of our programs contribute toward our core mission to perpetuate the original Wistar-Haines family values of education, social and environmental responsibility, and community development.

The Old Rose Workshop Series at Wyck
from March to October, 2012
Heritage roses are easier to grow than you might think, organically and without toxic sprays. However, there are lessons worth learning to ensure your roses reach their full potential throughout the year. Wyck’s 2012 Old Rose Workshop Series is a designed to shepherd you through a year in the life of your old rose, ensuring that you enjoy both the flowers and the fruits of your labor.

March 17, May 26, June 16, July 21, and October 20.
the instructors
Stephen Scanniello , President of the Heritage Rose Foundation, is best known as a hands-on gardener who transformed the Cranford Rose Garden of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden into one of the world’s most acclaimed rose gardens. Currently, Stephen maintains and designs private gardens throughout the United States. He continues to lecture, write, and serve as a judge for the international rose trials in Europe and the United States. He has received numerous awards and honors for his efforts in the preservation of old garden roses.
Elizabeth Belk is the Horticulturist at Wyck House and Garden, responsible for the care and propagation of the Wyck roses. Wyck’s rose garden is widely recognized as the oldest rose garden in America, with 65 cultivars of old roses currently. A graduate of the Arboretum School of the Barnes Foundation, Elizabeth delights in teaching people how to get the most out of their roses. Prior to embarking on her second career in horticulture (her "true calling"), she set up and ran public relations companies for multinational corporations in emerging markets, primarily in Eastern Europe.

Spring Pruning for Blooms
This workshop will give hands-on experience in tip pruning and revitalizing your roses after the winter without losing your upcoming flowers. Students should bring pruning shears and gloves.

Saturday, May 26
Rose Petals in All Their Glory
Throughout history people have harvested roses petals for all types of uses. This workshop will give you hands-on experience in making rose petal jelly, rose water, rose beads, potpourri, and candied rose petals. Students will take home what they make.

Saturday, June 16
Propagation of Roses
This workshop will give hands-on experience in propagating your roses (and other woody plants) easily, without a greenhouse or special equipment. Students will take home samples of different Wyck roses.
Saturday, July 21
Summer Pruning for Form
This workshop will provide hands-on experience in pruning old roses during the summer in order to shape and control their size. Students should bring pruning shears and gloves.
Saturday, October 20
Rose Hips and What You Make Of Them
Rose hips are present in the kitchens of many cultures and are a good source of Vitamin C. This workshop will give you hands-on experience in collecting and preparing rose hips from your garden and using them to make rose hip jam, rose hip candy, and rose hip syrup. Students will take home what they make.

The 2012 Wyck Old Rose Symposium will take place at Wyck in and around the rose garden, widely known as the oldest rose garden in America. The topic will be "Fragrance and Old Roses."
The first 20 registrants will receive a guided tour by the well-known rosarian and Wyck rose garden expert, Reverend Douglas Seidel. Doug was instrumental in the fantastic revival of the Wyck Rose Garden in the early 1970s after it had suffered several decades of neglect.
The morning will feature experts speaking on topics related to fragrance in old roses. The afternoon will consist of a wide variety of old rose workshops, ranging from propagation to perfume.

Tom Carruth on Rose Fragrance in Hybridizing
Tom serves as Curator: Rose Garden at the Huntington Botanical Gardens . From 1988 until earlier this year, he was in charge of the rose hybridizing effort as the Director of Research and Marketing at Weeks Roses.
Tara Krause on Roses and Perfumes
Tara is the owner of The Organic Perfumer , a New Jersey local farm natural perfumery. She creates organic, wild-crafted, ethically farmed botanical artisan perfumes and luxury beauty products in the grand tradition of the 17th- and 18th-century royal perfumers to the court of Versailles.
Stephen Scanniello on 19th Century Fragrant Philadelphia Gardens
Stephen is President of the Heritage Rose Foundation and a well-known rosarian and author. He is perhaps best known as the hands-on gardener who transformed the Cranford Rose Garden of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden into one of the world’s most acclaimed rose gardens.
Reverend Douglas T. Seidel
Doug is a consultant for the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants at Monticello. He has over 30 years' experience collecting and researching old roses. In 1973, he worked on a major project to identify Wyck's roses, replace early 19th century plants that had disappeared, and create a plot plan and catalog of the rose garden.

John D. Milner, FAIA (Fellow of the American Institute of Architects) is an architect who has devoted his career to the preservation and restoration of historic buildings, as well as to the designing of new buildings that are inspired by his knowledge of historic precedent. Complementing Milner's professional practice is his passion for the education of young architects and preservationists. For 35 years, he has served as Adjunct Professor of Architecture in the University of Pennsylvania's graduate program in historic preservation.

What: Join food historian, Susan McLellan Plaisted, as she uncovers Hannah Marshall Haines 1812-1813 receipt book. Susan will prepare several recipes and discuss her year-long exploration of early-19th century food preparation at Wyck. Bring a bag lunch.

The Germantown Farmers' Market at Wyck
When: Every Friday through November 2011, 2:00 - 6:00
Where: Germantown Avenue and Walnut Lane, in front of the Wyck entrance gate
What: Wyck's own backyard berries, kale, salad greens, carrots, peas, peppers, chard, eggs and more will be for sale, as well as the extremely fresh goods of our partner vendors. Wyck accepts vouchers from the Farmers Market Nutrition Program, as well as SNAP/food stamps in the form of the EBT/Access card. Email Emma and give her your email address to receive her Weekly Harvest Report (including recipes) every Thursday before the Friday market.

Living Centerpieces
When: Friday, November 18th, 4:00
What: Join Love 'n Fresh Flowers' Jennie Love in creating a truly unique and long-lasting autumn centerpiece of locally grown materials to adorn your holiday table. The focus of this class will be learning to combine living plants; preserved plant material such as leaves, moss and seed pods; gourds, pumpkins, and apples; and fresh cut flowers and foliage. The combination of materials will enable you to keep using your design for several weeks. All materials will be provided along with a rustic stone container for your design. Light refreshments will be served and a discussion on growing your own flowers at home is likely to break out. Participants will be encouraged to stroll through the historic house and gardens at Wyck.
Cost: $60/person, including instruction and all materials for your centerpiece. Class size is limited to 12; register early to guarantee a place.
